Downton Abbey on ITV1
Downton Abbey, the major drama series from ITV was filmed on location here at Highclere Castle. Britain’s best-loved period drama will bow out this autumn after six seasons in which it has faithfully recreated life in a grand country house. When the show began, in pre-war England, the delineation between the upper and lower orders was marked. The Crawleys lived in splendour, with vast numbers of staff and an unshaken belief that they would forever by at the top of society.

The making of Downton Abbey
Longstanding friend of the Carnarvon family, Julian Fellowes had Highclere Castle in mind as he wrote Downton Abbey. He often commented he wanted a house which spectacularly testified to the confidence and soaring optimism of the Edwardian period.

The success of Downton Abbey took everyone by surprise from the first nervous apprehension whether anyone would like the first episode or stay with it for the second or third… the series has become a phenomenon with appreciative viewers all around the world.

Highclere welcomes many visitors each year to view the Castle, the Egyptain Exhibition
and the surrounding Grounds and Gardens
