Imperial War Museum - London

Imperial War Museum - London

Thursday September 30th

There is lots to see and we recommend about two and a half hours for your visit. However, with new galleries, exhibitions, our onsite Café and shops, you may want to visit for half a day or longer.

Displayed across six floors, the museum’s vast collections encompass a wealth of objects – from uniforms to photographs, vehicles to films, weapons to works of art – each with a story to tell.

Itinerary

Enjoy a visit to the Imperial War Museum, followed by free time in the surrounding area for shopping and sightseeing.

IWM LONDON - This museum of 20th century warfare offers a thoughtful look at what day-to-day life was like for both citizens and soldiers in the two world wars. The IWM London has many weapons of war, including rockets, tanks, guns and submarines. A huge emphasis is placed on the social effects of war, through poetry, photography and film footage. Visitors can explore what home life was like in A Family in Wartime and visit the award-winning Holocaust Exhibition. Also, not to miss is the Secret War Gallery, which charts the history of agents' work and the creation of MI5 and M16. The museum also houses war art by artists David Bomberg, Henry Moore, and John Singer Sargent.

IWM is unique in its coverage of conflicts, especially those involving Britain and the Commonwealth, from the First World War to the present day. We seek to provide for, and to encourage, the study and understanding of the history of modern war and 'wartime experience'.

IWM is a family of five museums: IWM London; IWM North in Trafford, Greater Manchester; IWM Duxford near Cambridge; the Churchill War Rooms in Whitehall, London; and the historic ship HMS Belfast, moored in the Pool of London on the River Thames.  There is a lot to see and we recommend that you allow plenty of time for your visit. However, with our new galleries, exhibitions and on-site cafés and shops, lots of people will come for half-a day or more.
