Is the West Ends mother of all jukebox musicals, and my my, how can you resist it? Running since 1999 and earning itself a Laurence Oliver Award, Mamma Mia’s longevity is the perfect demonstration of a successful jukebox musical as it’s story line is as strong as the infamous ABBA hits the show boasts.
Set in the 90’s on a heavenly Greek island, complete with all the hunky men and beach babes the location suggests, Mamma Mia! is a tale of a mother and daughter’s relationship on the pairs bumpy road to lasting love. As the daughter, Sophie, prepares to marry island stud Sky, like any young girl her only wish is to have her father walk her down the isle. Unfortunately her father could be one of three men her mother rendezvoused with 20 years before hand, so in order to leave no leaf unturned Sophie invites all three ‘dads’ to her wedding, much to the horror of her mother, Donna.
Donna runs an island taverna and is preparing to play host to her daughter's wedding guests as well as some friends of her own. As her old pals join her on the island they relive their glory days as members of a girl band, “Donna and the Dynamos.” Luckily the trio of old friends are reunited just in time as Donna has to face her ghosts of lovers past.
There is no doubt that Mamma Mia has heart; show stopping numbers like “The Winner Takes It All” bringing tears to audience’s eyes, but it is first and foremost a musical romp with big and bold numbers, such as “Dancing Queen”, “Voulez Vous” and Money, Money, Money” that are often as camp as Christmas. Written by British playwright Catherine Johnson, Mamma Mia was also developed by ABBA members Benny and Björn and therefore contains a real essence of the 70’s pop divas in the storyline.
